This week I watched McFarland USA. This movie was pretty good. I was in the mood for a sports movie and this one popped up on TikTok, so I decided to watch it. It told a really touching story about a cross-country team struggling and overcoming these struggles to win the state cross title. The story kept me entertained the whole time even though it was technically just running. The way they were able to build suspense throughout the races, and make it seem action packed was cool to me. They did a good job at making this movie seem like more than just running. It did justice to sports movies in my opinion and would definitely recommend watching it. My favorite scene from the whole movie was at the end when Danny Diaz appeared out of nowhere towards the end of the final race and passed a bunch of people to secure the state title for the team. I am sad that there were a couple inaccuracies in the movie. Some characters were exaggerated for the movie. Even though this is true, I think the move was great, and showed a side to cross country that many people don't see unless they do the sport (a side that I saw this year when I joined).

I really enjoyed this movie. It was visually stunning, and the story was entertaining all the way through. The characters are fun and play off each other well. There is humor that is actually funny and not just satire or stupid. My favorite part of the movie was the animation, it was absolutely beautiful, the color popped and everything was fluid and appealing. The story had me a little confused. You are thrown into a world with no context and have to accept things that seen weird. The characters also seem to just accept whatever is given to them when in reality most people would be opposed or at least try to fight what is happening to them. For example, Sophie is turned into an old lady, and she is just completely fine with it minutes later. She also seems to gain a level of wisdom from being old when she never went through the middle stages to gain that wisdom. I found this weird, but they kept this trend throughout the whole movie, so it didn't make me dislike the movie. There were also little things that I found weird. Like why did Sophie keep shifting between old and young and somewhere in between. At first, I thought it had something to do with her being in places that made her feel young, but then one scene with Howl in it, she looked old again, and now I don't know why she kept changing. I think it would have made more sense if she went from young to old and then progressively got younger throughout the movie. Also, I am confused at why they included the changing of Howl's hair color. The movie was great, and I recommend it to basically anyone who is willing to watch it. This week I watched the movie/musical Tick, Tick... Boom!. This was a very good watch. One of my favorite musicals is RENT and Tick, Tick... Boom! is the story of the man who wrote it. This movie follow Jonathan Larson, played by Andrew Garfield, as he writes the first musical he tries to take to Broadway. He has difficulty finding people to even critique his work. Throughout the movie you follow as he struggles writing new songs, holding his relationships together, and holding himself together. In the movie there are even hints to how he was inspired to write RENT. Throughout the movie there are random songs being sung, and although I don't like it as much as watching a live musical, it is very fun to watch. You get to see all the difficulties' artist have to go through to make ends meet and try to get their big break. They have to balance their work and social lives as well as spend all their free time working on their art. This movie also delivered one of my favorite quotes, "Everyone's unhappy in New York!". I don't know why I love this quote, but I do. I also feel connected to this quote because I too am unhappy when I am in New York. The movie was very good and one reason I liked it so much is because of the way it was structured. It was very linear but jumped between three different plots. His home life, his work life, and some place where it almost looked like he was doing stand up. The jumps were flawless, and they never left me confused. By jumping between these three places, it gave the sense that he was really crunched for time. It seemed like he was in one place and then rapidly he was in a different place and since they pretty much just continued the same dialogue in the new setting it really felt like he was extremely busy. This helped to reinforce the difficulties of being an artist and the difficulties of Jonathan Larson. Lastly, Andrew Garfield was amazing, and I think this is one of his best performances, maybe second to Hacksaw Ridge, but also maybe topping hacksaw Ridge. This week I watched Bullet Train. This movie is a comedy, and a nice movie to watch if you are bored. I chose a comedy this week because the last movie I watched was heavier and followed a sadder plot. I also chose to watch this movie when I was bored one day, and it kept me entertained the whole time. The movie follows a bunch of assassins who are all stuck on a train together. They each seem to have a different objective, and it makes for an interesting plot. You are obviously rooting for one person, but you get the perspectives of multiple and in the end you end up loving most of the characters. The movie has a ton of funny scenes as well as a lot of action. I would highly recommend this movie for anyone who is bored or just wants a quick laugh. |
